Big Announcement at Big Ridge Elementary

Charitable givers invested in the futures of Chattanooga. Dr. Dane and Sheila Boyington gave a gift to all the kindergarten and first-grade students. Each child received an extra $50 added to their Chattanooga Future Fund savings account. This boosts their college and career savings early to assist the students in their post-graduation plans.

What Is the Chattanooga Future Fund?

The Chattanooga Future Fund helps students in Hamilton County Schools save financially toward their futures. Every kindergartener and middle schooler in Hamilton County Schools receives $100 in a special savings account. Students can use this money later for college, trade school, or other learning after high school.

The program is a five-year pilot project that began in January 2025. It is led by Chattanooga 2.0, with help from the Tennessee Department of Treasury and Pinnacle Bank.

Why the Boyingtons Gave the Gift

Dr. Dane and Sheila Boyington have special ties to Big Ridge. Both of their daughters attended Big Ridge Elementary. They wanted to show others how small acts of giving can make a big difference.

Shelia Boyington also serves on the Future Fund’s board. She said something simple and powerful, “Even a small gift from our community can reach students and parents in a personal way. It shows them saving matters. It also helps kids start to imagine their life after high school.”

Before the event, the students wrote on a piece of paper what they wanted to be when they grew up. Throughout the announcement, students were asked what they wrote.

Also, Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Sonia Stewart, spoke at the event. She said, “This is an investment in each young person. We believe in you. We want you to follow your dreams written on the papers you hold.” Her words were spoken to both students and their parents.

What This Means for Students

Now, each kindergartener and first grader at Big Ridge starts with a total of $150:

  • $100 from the Chattanooga Future Fund
  • $50 from the Boyingtons

Why This Matters

Kids learn that saving a little early can matter a lot later. In Hamilton County Schools, we want students at every grade level to know they matter. We want our students to thrive and experience a future without limits. Our strategic plan shows this when we say our goal is for every community served. We are so thankful for the wonderful people who contribute to the just cause and the everyday change agents across Hamilton County Schools.
