Congratulations to our Student Council for receiving the "Four Star Award" from the Tennessee Association of Student Councils. We were judged to have one of the top Student Council programs in the state due to a variety of factors, most notably that we do so many large scale community service activities throughout the year.
The Student Council members are the Student Council Officers, Class Officers, and Directed Studies Representatives who serve the school and make decisions affecting all students in the school. The Student Council is headed by Mrs. Hollingsworth. Any concerns about or ideas for the school should be brought to the attention of Mrs. Hollingsworth or a member of the Student Council.
Mrs. Hollingsworth's Leadership class is the OHS Core Group. Core Group students are honorary, non-voting members of the Student Council. They are responsible for making the signs that are put up around the school to cheer on our many clubs and athletic teams as they venture off to compete for the school. Also, the Core Group mentors at local elementary schools around the area, acting as true leaders in the community. Applications are taken in the spring for the Leadership class positions of the following year. There are approximately 60 applications accepted, with 30 serving each semester.
Student Council Officers- The President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer will be elected by the student body. The president must be a member of the upcoming Senior class. The remaining officers must be upcoming juniors or seniors. All officers must be of good moral character, having no desciplinary record, have at least a 2.5 GPA and have attended Ooltewah High School for at least one year. All Student Council officers will be elected in the spring. New officers will attend the TASC State Convention and the East Tennessee Area Workshop.
Student Council Leadership Class- Consists of 70 total members, 35 in the Fall semester and 35 in the Spring semester. Applicants are required to display good moral character with no disciplinary record, have a 2.5 average and must have attended Ooltewah High School for at least one year. Applications must be filled out in the spring. Admittance includes writing an essay, pictures as proof of leadership potential and an interview process. Each student is required to do 35 hours of Community Service, participate in all school service projects, and mentor two days a week for 45 minutes at an OHS area feeder elementary or middle school. Class work includes short speeches, presentations, group creative problem solving projects and collaborative activities enabling students to study and practice elements of leadership.
