affects all phases of our lives.  If we are a child, it may determine who we

become if our daily live changes.  In Yoki, even though it takes place in St.

Louis, WWII and her daddy going off to war makes a big difference in her

life.

 

Collier, J. and C., My Brother Sam is Dead, Scholastic, Inc. 1974. (grades

6-7).  All of his life, Tim Meeker has looked up to his brother Sam. Now the Revolutionary War has come, and Sam is on the wrong side.  What will happen to the family?

 

Lowry, L. Number the Stars. Yearling, 1090./  (grades 4-5)  War can bring out the worst or the best in people.  In Number the Stars, some Jewish people find out what true friends are as they go about hiding them and helping them survive the Nazis.

 

O'Dell, S. Sarah Bishop Scholastic Inc. 1980.  (grades 5-6)  Sarah Bishop isn't a Tory.  She isn't a Patriot.  She is a fifteen-year old girl.  The Revolutionary War came to her village and both sides become her enemies.  Sometimes in war there are no good guys.

 

  Westall, R.  Machine Gunners. Alfred a Knoff, 1975. (grades 4-5)  When there is a war going on, everyone gets involved, even the children.  Sometimes souvenir hunting can be dangerous for both the person hunting and the other people.

 

Yolen, J. The Devil's Arithmetic. Scholastic Inc. 1988. (grades 5-6)  The effects of war continues for years for the families of those involved.  In this book, a celebration takes a young Jewish gird back to the years of World War II in Poland.

 

Steele, W., The Perilous Road, Illus. by P. Galdone, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1958. (grades 4-5)  When a foreign army invades a young boy's home territory, it changes his life completely.  His big brother fights for the enemy, his best friend becomes a spy, and his daily life becomes almost unbearable.
