Heritage

 

Baltuck, N., Apples From Heaven, Linnet Book, 1995.  (grades 3-6).  A book

of read - aloud stories from around the world that teach and entertain students. There are stories about clever talkers, gossips, liars, braggarts and stories to instill wisdom.  Many of the stories relate to different cultures that would give the students a backward look at their past.

 

Hoffman, M.  Amazing Grace.  Illus. by C. Birch.  Dial Books for Young

Readers, 1991.  (grades 3-4)  Grace is a young girl of Afro-American

heritage who likes to dream big dreams and pretend grand activities.  It is a story of someone believing that they can make their dreams come true,

regardless of their heritage.

 

Mederis, M., Daisy and the Doll, Vermont Folklike Center (grades 2-3)  Daisy, an eight year old black girl living in rural Vermont in the 1890's, is given a black doll by her teacher and becomes uncomfortable that her skin is a different color from that of her classmates.  This all changes after she finds the courage to speak from her heart.

 

Monk, I., Hope, Carolrhoda, (grades 4-5)  During a visit with her great-aunt, a young girl learns the story behind her name and learns to feel proud of her biracial heritage.

 

Spinelli, J. Maniac Magee.  Scholastic Inc. 1990.  (grades 5-6)  Maniac is a young boy with no home, no family, and no concern for skin collar.  He teaches a whole town the meaning of everyone is equal.
