(grades 5-7)  This book discusses how the brain functions, the effects

of drugs on the brain, how drug use can lead to addiction, and where

to go to get help.  It is written in such a way to appeal to young                readers and not to preach to them.

 

Havelin, K., Child Abuse, Capstone Press, 1990.  (adults)  Children have been abused throughout history.  Many thousands of children are abused and neglected in North America Every year.  Most abusers are the child's parents.  This book attempts to give adults in leadership positions some direction in helping children caught in these situations.

 

Havelin, K., Family Violence, Capstone Press, 2000 (adults) Family violence is a kind of abuse that is very common.  It can happen to anyone - rich or poor.  Children need help knowing how to find their way out of the cycle.  This book is for adults to use in helping the children deal with their present life, make a plan for their safety if needed, and what to look for in the future and how to prepare for it.

mother come to a shelter where they find a safe place to stay with other women and children in similar circumstances.
